Outdoor Wedding Survival Tip #1: Unite Without the Flame

Both outdoor weddings and unity candles are popular these days.  Individually they are meaningful and touching.  Combined, they can be a disaster!

Imagine your unity candle blowing out during your outdoor, breezy waterside ceremony (what does it mean when you can't keep the flame of unity lit for an hour?  Does it bode well for a lifetime?).  Or worse - blowing over!  You can cover it with a hurricane glass, but that's less effective when you want to use the popular version of the candle that has two "family" tapers with a central unity pillar.

What can you do instead?  One popular option that I'm asked about all the time is unity sand.  It comes in different containers and colors, and is a pretty touch (if you don't have a wayward flower girl or ring bearer who decides to "mix it up a little...or a lot!".  And don't ask me how I know this, but in a pinch, golf course sand will do JUST fine.

If unity sand isn't for you, but you have concerns about open flame and the great outdoors, consult your officiant or wedding coordinator for other ideas that will personalize, but not jeopardize, your outdoor ceremony.

Happy planning.
